The merge guide

About merge puzzles

2048 was written in a weekend in 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old developer, as a clone of a clone — and it outlived both originals. The rules fit in a line: slide the board, matching tiles combine, a new tile appears after every move. The tension comes from the fact that you cannot move one tile without moving all of them.

What makes it hard is board space, not the numbers. Every merge frees a cell and every move spawns one, so you are always one careless slide away from a full grid. The standard advice — keep your largest tile in a corner and never move in the direction that would pull it out — works because it turns a chaotic board into an ordered row. Merge Shot turns the slide into a shot: you choose the column, and chains merge on their own.

Merge games since have kept the idea and changed the shape. Fruit merges like Tropical Drop drop into a container and use physics instead of a grid, so combining is about where things land rather than which way you swipe.

Every game here saves your board and ranks your best score.
